Personal experience and knowledge

Following a traditional academic education and some time in property management in London, James decided to become a hands-on carpenter. After completing his City & Guilds apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery, James lived near the market town of Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire, where he worked on numerous listed and historic buildings, many of which were owned by the National Trust or part of private estates. James continued to gain practical experience after returning to Kent before focusing on professional qualifications.

Since then, James’s qualifications and memberships comprise:

  • National and Higher National Certificates in Building Studies
  • Diploma in Building Surveying from Reading University
  • Professional member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors
  • Professional member of the Chartered Institute of Building
  • Member of the RICS Building Conservation Forum
  • Member of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings
  • Member of the Pyramus and Thisbe Club
  • Member of the Faculty of Party Wall Surveyors
  • Member of the Vernacular Architecture Group
  • Affiliate member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation
  • Member of the Weald and Downland Museum

James has successfully completed a range of both theoretical and practical RICS-accredited training courses such as “Understanding Thatched Roofs”, “Care and Repair of Historic Timber and Stone Structures”, “Cobb and rammed earth buildings”. Having retained his enthusiasm for and expanded his knowledge of older and Listed buildings and building methods, James receives specialist consultancy work throughout much of England.

In addition to vernacular construction, he maintains knowledge of modern building methods and standards of construction by Continuing Professional Development.
